SOME FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT COLUMBUS DAY

This date commemorates the day Christopher Columbus set foot in North America (Bahamas) on his way to find a quicker trade route to India (while proving the idea that the earth is round and not flat). Columbus Day is celebrated on the Second Monday in October

Although he never set foot on the Continental United States, his journey is celebrated nonetheless.

Columbus Day Funology (Holiday Funology)

Columbus day is traditionally celebrated by North American's to celebrate the "discovery" of America by Christopher Columbus.  Gift giving is not usually part of the celebratory ritual of this holiday.  However, for those of us who like to give, here are some great ideas:

Romantic: Make your significant other a romantic dinner with a holiday theme.  Fish should be the main course (sailing across the Atlantic) and give it either an Italian (Columbus's birthplace) or Portuguese (he sailed for Portugal) flavor.  You might also want to surf the web and find one or two recipies for Native American side dishes (they were already living here when Columbus arrived).

For Kids: Use this holiday as an opportunity to show children the wonders of discovery.  Take them to the zoo, museum or planetarium.  Buy them a telescope, a microscope or something that could look at the wonders of the world without or within.

Travel: Is your anniversary or significant other's birthday around this date?  Well what would be better than to combine this holiday with some fun?  The way to do this is to take a cruise through the Caribbean islands with a stop on Trinidad & Tobago, the first stop on Columbus's first Journey. [Note: You might want to wait until late October or Early November to ensure that the hurricane season is over in this region.]
