SOME FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT FLAG DAY

On June 14th, 1777, a resolution for an official flag of the United States was created.  In honor of this, a school teacher in the late 1800's began a tradition of observing this day in honor of the U.S. flag.  It became an official national holiday in 1949 and named National Flag Day.

Be proud to be American and proudly display your American flag. Gift giving is not customary on this holiday (and you usually do not get off from work for it either).  If gift giving is in your heart, let us follow the lessons of our past President John F. Kennedy, who said "Let us not ask what our country can do for us, but ask what we can do for our country."  Therefore this should be a day of giving to your country and community.  Give of your time to a local charity or donate some money to a worthy cause.  Purchase some U.S. Savings Bonds for investment - this is good for the country today and yourself in the future.

If you live on the East Coast of the U.S., or want to take a short vacation, put Baltimore, MD in your travel itinerary around the time of the year.  Baltimore is a great place to visit, and relive the history of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by paying a visit to Fort McHenry.

If you are still stuck for gift ideas, what would be more appropriate that purchasing an American flag for someone else to display.  However, do not be limited by a traditional flag to fly on a flag post.  How about a pin to wear on your clothing, a sticker for your notebook, a window decal in the shape of the flag, or even a coffee mug with a picture of Old Glory.
