SOME FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT LABOR DAY

What started as a vague concept based on the dreams of the working class had its beginnings in the early 1800s. However, the "holiday" was not celebrated until September 5th, 1882 by the Central Labor Union in New York City. In 1884 it was changed to the first Monday in September.  As the years passed, more and more unions and working class people began to celebrate this "working man's" holiday and States throughout the US began to recognize this day.  In 1894 Congress officially declared the first Monday in September to be "Labor Day."

Facing the end of summer is never a happy thought, but Labor Day marks the end of the warm winter months and introduces us to the cold weather to come. Let your labor day gifts reflect the warmth of the summer so that it will stay with the recipient for the months to come.  There is nothing warmer than good food and drink.

Going to a BBQ/Party: There are a few ideas for things to bring to Labor day BBQ.  A cheap way of bringing a platter of cookies is to buy a platter at a 99 cents store with a few packages of cookies from your local market.  You can also purchase Gift Baskets to bring, but you need to order it early.  If the people at the group are drinkers, you can bring them a nice bottle of wine which is always welcome.  If the host knows that their guests are beer drinkers, they probably have the customary Budweiser or Miller - so bring something from a smaller company like a local microbrewery, or get something exotic.

Holding a BBQ/Party: Give yourself and everyone else a gift by providing great food.  Find the best butcher in your neighborhood and order their finest cuts of meat.  Also have the best assortment of drinks and side dishes for your guests.  If you do not have a good butcher near you, or do not know where to look, Omaha Steaks provides everything you need for a great BBQ.

For Children: Parents and guardians work the whole year long.  They give you food and shelter, they also buy you clothing and toys and not to mention allowance.  Labor Day is a great time to show them how much you appreciate what they do for you.  Get them something to show you care - send your mom something nice, like some flowers.  Send your dad a fine cigar.  You can also send them a Vermont Teddy Bear, dressed to match their profession.
