SOME
FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT SWEETEST DAY
|
|
Sweetest Day is a holiday where
people take time out to show appreciation towards others by giving candy
or other sweets to people or just for the purpose of making them
happy. The holiday began in 1922 when Herbert Birch Kingston, an
employee at a chocolate factory in Cleveland handed out sweets to children
at a nearby orphanage to add a little cheer to their lives. Each
year, Mr. Kingston would continue to do this, but other people began to
get on the bandwagon as well. The tradition of sweets has expanded into
other states, and Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of
October by many people around the country - especially in the states
around the Great Lakes and in the Northeast. |

The gift giving tradition on
Sweetest Day began with sweets being given to those less fortunate.
However, the scope of gift giving has expanded to include loved ones as
well. It is always nice to give to your spouse or partner, but it is
sometimes nicer to give to those who are really in need or just need to
feel appreciated.
