Alberta Family Day is a day that celebrates families
and family values. It originated with the early pioneers who first came
to Alberta, and survived with the family at the center of their lives.
Family Day was introduced by Premier Don Getty and
has become officially recognized by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta
as a public holiday in 1989 (Family Day Act F4: 1989: cF-1.5 s1) and is
celebrated on the Third Monday of February. This is a day where many
workers may have off. |

The holiday is based
around the family, so gifts and activities for this day should be family
related. There are many activities going on in Alberta itself (see
Alberta Centenial website for info), and a gift to the family would be
to bring them to one of these activities.
Other gift suggestions would be to purchase games that the whole family
could enjoy together, inviting your family over for a big lunch or dinner,
or traveling over the long weekend to visit your family if they do not live
close by. If you are visiting a family member, remember to bring or
send flowers, wine, candy or a gift basket to say "I Love You." |
