SOME FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT PAN AMERICAN DAY

Congress first declared a Pan America Day on April 14, 1931 and a U.S. President has made a proclamation for a Pan American Day every year since.  In fact, this holiday has expanded and the President also proclaims an entire week as Pan American Week.  The holiday first originated in 1930 when the Pan American Union (currently called the Organization of American States) passed a resolution to celebrate a Pan American Day amongst all of its member nations.  The date, April 14th, was selected to commemorate the first International Conference of American States on April 14th, 1890, which established the Union of American Republics (the predecessor of the Pan American Union).  Pan American Day is celebrated amongst the 34 democratic nations in the Western Hemisphere to commemorate each country's commitment to its ties to one another and its unity in defending our democratic freedoms. The holiday is marked with festivals and events in each country.
