BOSS'S DAY

Boss Day or Boss's Day is celebrated on October 16th of each year.  It gets its origins from an employee who wanted to show appreciation for her boss and registered the holiday in 1956 with the US Chamber of Commerce.  The holiday has caught on, especially with the push of greeting card companies.

This is a day that has been set aside to show appreciation for our bosses and managers.  Not all bosses are mean and nasty.  Some are blessed with bosses who let us leave a little early some days, buy us coffee every morning (out of their own pocket) or are just all around nice people.  This is a day we can let them know we appreciate them.

Boss's Day Facts and Information

National Boss Day 2003 Facts (Hallmark): Information on the origin and history of the holiday, its celebration, and related facts.

Bosses Day (Holiday Insights): Information and links about the holiday.

Boss Day (123Holiday.net): Information on Boss's Day.

Boss's Day Faces Struggle to Find Celebratory Place (Ahwatukee Foothills News): An article on the current celebratory actions of people on the holiday.

As shown above, Boss's Day is not just another Hallmark holiday, but was actually conceived by a grateful employee.  If you too have this type of relationship with your boss/manager, you might want to get them a "little something" to show your appreciation for them (it is also an appropriate way to brown nose).  The gifts should not be extravagant, but should show that you put some time in it. It would also be fine to share the gift with other's in your office.

Ideas:

  • Personalized Coffee Mug or Picture Frame

  • Something for the desk such as a pen/pencil holder

  • Flowers (as a group gift)

  • Gift Certificate to an Online website such so they can choose whatever they want (as a group gift)

  • If you do not want to go out of your way, a nice greeting card might say it all.
